Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established in 1991 and is located in the Virunga Mountains region of southwestern Uganda. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, covering an area of 33.7 square kilometers, making it one of the main places in Uganda to see mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorillas are one of the two subspecies of eastern gorillas, with fewer than 700 remaining in the world today, making them one of the most critically endangered species. They are large, have long fur, and are gentle in nature. Most live in the border region where Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda meet. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of their most important habitats, which is why it has become one of Uganda’s most famous attractions, drawing numerous domestic and international visitors each year. However, these gorillas sometimes cross the border and “migrate” into Rwanda, so visitors need to time their trip right to catch a glimpse of them.

In addition, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to three volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. The slopes and surrounding areas of these volcanoes have fertile soil, covered with bamboo and broadleaf forests. This not only provides a comfortable habitat for other animals but also brings a refreshing vibe to the entire park.
