Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 in the Kafu River Basin area of Nakasongola District, just 176 kilometers from Uganda’s capital, Kampala. It is a private, non-profit wildlife sanctuary. As of 2010, it remained Uganda’s only rhino conservation site.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary aims to steadily increase the rhino population by providing them with a natural habitat, breeding, conserving, and gradually reintroducing them into Uganda’s national parks. At the same time, it raises awareness among visitors about rhino conservation through guided tours, education, and outreach. Currently, the sanctuary has expert guides on hand, as well as a range of facilities including a restaurant, camping grounds, and rest areas, all designed to meet visitors’ needs without disturbing the rhinos' environment. In addition to rhinos, the sanctuary is home to 20 other animal species including monkeys, antelopes, hippos, and crocodiles, as well as various bird species. Multiple security personnel are on duty 24/7 to ensure the safety of both the animals and visitors.
