Lake Edward
Lake Edward is situated on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Its northern shore lies just a few kilometers from the equator. The lake surface is at an elevation of 920 meters, stretching 77 kilometers from north to south and 40 kilometers from east to west, covering an area of 2,325 square kilometers. It is the smallest lake in the African Great Lakes region and the 15th largest lake on the African continent. The lake was named by British explorer Henry Morton Stanley in honor of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom.
Formed by fault subsidence, Lake Edward reaches a maximum depth of 117 meters. It is fed by numerous mountain streams. Its waters flow northward into Lake Albert via the Semliki River and connect northeastward through a canal to Lake George in Uganda, forming one of the largest water systems in the region. The lake boasts abundant fish resources and serves as one of the most important fishing grounds in the area. It is also home to a large population of hippos, so caution is advised when boating on the lake. The surrounding area features rich flora and fauna and stunning scenery, making it a great destination for visitors seeking tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
