Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

Introduction    Located on Pamplemousses Island, the botanical garden was built in 1796 and covers an area of 2 to 3 square kilometers. It functions as a nursery for growing tropical plants. The garden boasts many rare and precious tropical species, including towering ancient trees, banyans with massive aerial roots, and a diverse array of unique flowers and plants. Especially well-known are the pools of giant ancient water lilies—the Victoria amazonica—renowned as the world’s largest water lilies. Their leaves typically measure around 2 meters in diameter and are strong enough to support the weight of a baby. There are also rows of stately palm trees, among which one species blooms only once every hundred years; the tree dies after flowering. Its flowers can reach up to 3 meters in height, making them the largest flowers in the world.
