70% of the species found here cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. That’s why the globally popular animated film 《Madagascar》 sparked a worldwide “Madagascar craze” that continues to this day. Madagascar, officially known as the Republic of Madagascar, is an island nation in southeastern Africa, consisting of one large island and several smaller ones.

Astonishing Unique Species

The island is home to 5% of the world’s animal and plant species, 80% of which are unique to Madagascar (endemic species), such as lemurs and the angonoka tortoise. These flora and fauna have evolved independently for millions of years after the island separated from Africa and India, and they are found in very limited areas.

The country has 13,000 plant species, most of which are endemic. The Grandidier's baobab is one of six unique baobab species on the island. Of the island’s 373 frog species, 99% are endemic, including the critically endangered painted mantella found only in the central highlands.
