Seven-Colored Earth

The Seven-Colored Earth of Mauritius is one of the island’s most unique and renowned natural wonders, located in a lush, tree-surrounded valley in the southwestern part of the island. There is a beautiful legend about the Seven-Colored Earth: long ago, a poor but kind little boy followed a rainbow and found the entrance to heaven. He had so much fun in the fairyland that he thought he had found true happiness. However, he didn’t belong in that realm and eventually had to leave. When the time came for him to go back to the human world, he asked the fairies if he could visit again. Not wanting to disappoint him, the fairies scattered colorful fairy dust across the earth, creating a replica of their magical soil. This earthly paradise is the colored sand dunes of Chamarel in Mauritius.

The Seven-Colored Earth resembles a small hill, rising in the middle and connecting with the slopes on the east and west sides, while gentle slopes on the north and south stretch toward the flatlands, like multicolored streams flowing into the surrounding jungles. Though not large in area—approximately fifty meters from east to west and about a hundred meters from north to south—the Seven-Colored Earth is a spectacular natural phenomenon. Its stripes of color are not uniform, yet they are distinctly separated: red intermingled with blue, blue containing yellow, and yellow flecked with green. The colors blend into one another yet maintain their individual vibrancy, neither overwhelming nor overshadowing the others, presenting a dazzling, multicolored world that forms a series of astonishing ground rainbows. Even more remarkably, if you dig up the differently colored soils from the slopes, mix them together, and then let heavy rain fall, they will naturally separate back into their original colors. The Seven-Colored Earth was formed through the gradual erosion of volcanic ash, and over the long years, it has developed an extraordinary uniformity that is difficult for human intervention to alter. It remains the only volcanic ash landscape in the world with such a magical and distinct color-patterned terrain.
