The economy of Mauritius is primarily based on the sugar industry. Therefore, if you want to understand the origins of Mauritius' cosmopolitan culture and the cultural essence of its people, the Sugar Museum is a great place to visit. The Sugar Museum opened on October 28, 2002, covering an area of about 5,000 square meters, and is located in a former sugar factory. This old sugar factory closed in 1999 and, after three years of hard renovation, was transformed into the present Sugar Museum.

The Sugar Museum showcases the development of the small island of Mauritius over more than four centuries, closely tied to the sugar industry. It also records the hard work and sweat of laborers who dedicated their lives to sugar production. Additionally, it vividly presents the sugar-making process through photos and authentic machinery and tools. The Sugar Museum consists of three parts — the Eco-Museum, Boutik Village, and Le Fangourin Restaurant. The Eco-Museum displays some original sugar-making machines, illustrating the birth and progress of the sugar industry, the demographic development of Mauritius, and also introduces visitors to sugar-producing plants, the sugar production process, and the sugar market.
