Sacred Lake

A natural lake formed by a volcanic eruption, it is a place of worship for Hindu devotees in Mauritius. Grand Bassin is located in the southern part of Mauritius, near Mareaux Vacoas, and is regarded as sacred by the local people. It is said that a missionary once sprinkled holy water he had brought from Europe into the lake, and thus it came to be known as "Sacred Lake." This is a natural lake formed by a volcanic eruption. The area is home to one of Mauritius’ most famous Hindu temples — the largest of its kind outside India. As such, it is also a major site of worship for Hindus in Mauritius, especially during the annual Maha Shivaratri festival, when celebrations are particularly grand. The surrounding mountains and vegetation are reflected in the lake’s emerald-green waters, creating a tranquil and beautiful scene.
