Dalinor National Nature Reserve

Dalinor National Nature Reserve is a national-level nature reserve.

Dalinor Nature Reserve is situated in the western part of Hexigten Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, about 90 kilometers from Jingpeng Town, the seat of the Hexigten Banner People's Government. The reserve spans three sumus: Dalainuori, Darhanwula, and Aqiwula. Its northwest borders the Inner Mongolia Xilingol Grassland Nature Reserve, while its southern section lies in the eastern part of the Little Tengger Desert. To the west, it is bounded by the boundary between Xilingol League and Chifeng City, and to the east, it is about 80 kilometers from the Baiyin Aobao National Nature Reserve. The geographical coordinates of the reserve are longitude 116°22′–117°00′ east and latitude 43°11′–43°27′ north, covering a total area of 119,413.55 hectares.

Dalinor National Nature Reserve is an important migratory corridor and one of the key gathering areas for migratory birds in northern China. Therefore, the reserve is a comprehensive nature reserve primarily dedicated to protecting rare bird species and their diverse ecosystems, including lakes, wetlands, deserts, grasslands, and forests that sustain them. The unique natural geography has nurtured the renowned inland lake ecosystem on the Inner Mongolia Plateau. Lakes, rivers, marshes, and wet meadows throughout the reserve make up 35.8% of its total area, forming a vital wetland ecosystem that plays a dominant role in maintaining ecological balance and stability in the region. In the northwestern part of the reserve, on the basalt plateau and lacustrine plains, lies vast, open grassland where the most representative chestnut-calcium grassland of the Inner Mongolia Plateau thrives. In the Little Tengger Desert to the south of the reserve, there is a distinctive elm sparse forest grassland landscape, a rather unique type within the grassland zone. In the undulating sand dunes of the southeast, sandy hillock vegetation and wetland vegetation intermingle, with sparse forests, shrubs, meadows, vegetation, and marsh vegetation distributed in a ring-like pattern, creating a representative sandy grassland landscape type.

To date, 160 bird species from 36 families and 16 orders have been identified in Dalinor Nature Reserve. Among the nationally protected animal species in the reserve, those listed as Priority A-1 in the China Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan for avian species diversity conservation include six species: black stork, red-crowned crane, white-naped crane, great bustard, Pallas’s sea eagle, and Chinese egret. Priority A-2 includes three species: grey crane, demoiselle crane, and whooper swan. Priority B (China endemic species) includes eleven species: lesser white-fronted goose, kite, sparrowhawk, common buzzard, hen harrier, grey falcon, red-necked falcon, merlin, and long-eared owl.

Among the rare birds, wading and waterfowl species dominate both in variety and number. During spring and autumn, thousands of whooper swans and hundreds of white-naped cranes, grey cranes, and demoiselle cranes inhabit the area, along with dozens of great bustards that breed and live here.

The reserve boasts diverse ecosystems and abundant rare species resources. From a landscape ecosystem perspective, the reserve presents a sequential arrangement from north to south: basalt plateau, lacustrine plain, lake basin lowland, and aeolian sandy land. Correspondingly, the vegetation includes plateau plain and lacustrine plain flora, low-wetland vegetation, and sandy sparse forest grassland vegetation. Additionally, the lake group centered around Dalinor, along with the mountain landscapes formed by Dahan Mountain and Zhanzi Mountain, provide varied ecological environments for rich species resources. The reserve currently has 160 identified bird species, 15 rodent species, 21 fish species, 72 phytoplankton species, 36 zooplankton species, over 20 benthic animal species, and approximately 434 species of higher plants. There are also several small mammal species within the reserve.

With its unique natural landscapes and diverse species resources, the reserve attracts numerous scholars, experts, and nature-loving tourists from China and abroad for research, visits, and tourism, leaving every visitor with wonderful memories. It serves not only as an important base for scientific research but also as an ideal destination for eco-tourism. The area is filled with scenic views and picturesque landscapes, allowing visitors to fully experience the boundless charm of nature.
