Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle is situated atop Castle Hill in Slovenia’s capital. It was first built in the 11th century as a wooden structure. In the 15th century, the Habsburgs reconstructed the castle to withstand attacks by the Ottoman Turks. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Gothic churches and artworks were added. From the early 19th century until 1945, the castle served as a prison.

Visitors can reach the castle on foot, by car, or via cable car. Ljubljana Castle is surrounded by a beautiful forest, which can be traversed through a path leading up to the fortress. The castle is also well-preserved and was once the seat of the Dukes of Carinthia in Austria. Features within the castle include a natural spring, a medieval prison, Erasmus Tower, gunpowder storages, halls, palaces, water reservoirs, St. George’s Church, a museum, a viewing tower, and a pentagonal tower. From the viewing tower, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Ljubljana—especially stunning at night. The castle hosts various exhibitions, concerts, summer festivals, and New Year’s fireworks throughout the year.
