Lake Cerknica

Lake Cerknica is an intermittent lake located in the western part of Slovenia. It is 10.5 kilometers long, 4.7 kilometers wide, with an average depth of 10 meters, and receives about 1700 mm of rainfall annually. Covering an area of 26 square kilometers, it becomes the largest lake in Slovenia when rainfall is abundant.

Lake Cerknica is one of Slovenia's most important lakes and is also a lake that appears and disappears. During the rainy season, it stores large amounts of water and becomes the country’s largest lake. In contrast, during dry seasons—especially extreme droughts—it can mysteriously vanish. This unique body of water serves as Slovenia’s most well-known recreational lake when water levels are high, offering a variety of activities such as windsurfing, swimming, and fishing, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the pleasures of the lake.
