Križna Cave

Križna Cave, also known as the "Cross Cave" or "Karst Cave," is located in southeastern Slovenia and is famous for its 45 underground lakes and emerald-green waters, making it one of Slovenia's most renowned caves.

Križna Cave was first mentioned in 1832. In 1926, Slovenian cave researchers discovered lakes and underground rivers within the cave, as well as the skeletal remains of over 2,000 cave bears. In terms of biodiversity, Križna Cave is the world’s fourth-largest cave system, with 44 different animal species found inside. The cave stretches 8 kilometers in length, and its temperature remains constant year-round at 8°C, which is highly favorable for animal life. During winter, the cave hosts about 400 hibernating bats of seven different species, the most common being the greater mouse-eared bat.

Aside from its diverse wildlife, the cave’s uniquely shaped stalagmites and stalactites are another major highlight. Visitors can take a boat ride across the emerald-green waters to admire the varied formations of Križna Cave.
