Prešeren Square

Prešeren Square is located in the center of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It is a funnel-shaped square and one of the most important squares in Slovenia, serving as a venue for various events such as concerts, sporting events, and political gatherings. It has become an indispensable part of local life.

The square began to take shape in the 17th century and started playing a significant role in the 18th century, with its modern appearance forming in the 19th century. On the eastern side of the square stands a statue of France Prešeren, Slovenia’s national poet and one of Europe’s finest Romantic poets. Above the contemplative poet is a statue of a goddess holding a laurel branch aloft, commemorating his great contribution to Romanticism.

Prešeren Square was designated a national cultural monument in 1991 and has appeared multiple times on postcards from the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 2008, a model of the square has been displayed in the “Mini-Europe” park in Brussels, Belgium.
