Astronomical Clock

Introduction The famous Astronomical Clock on the outer wall of the Old Town Hall is a beautifully crafted chiming clock consisting of two parts. The clock tower was built in 1410. Designed according to the geocentric theory of the time, the upper dial completes a full rotation once a year, while the lower one does so once a day. On the hour, various animated sequences take place, including a skeleton pulling the time, the appearance of figures, and a rooster crowing. At noon every day, twelve apostles of Jesus appear in sequence from the sides of the clock—six turning to the left and six to the right. Following the crow of a rooster, the windows close and the chimes ring. This clock still keeps accurate time today, and locals often stop here to check and calibrate their watches. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s film “End of Days” was filmed here. It is said that to ensure no other clock like it would ever be made, the craftsman who built it was blinded.

There are large cafés near the Astronomical Clock, along with lively street performances, Czech folk music, and jazz. In the alley opposite the Astronomical Clock, there is a market selling handicrafts such as crystal glass. The oldest Bohemian crystal glass shop is located in this alley, and there are also several restaurants nearby.
