Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is this beautiful city known as the “City of a Hundred Spires.” Situated in the Vltava River basin, it is this very river that has nurtured what is now a golden-hued city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Vltava River is the longest and largest river in the Czech Republic, and it is the lifeblood of Prague. Stretching 430 kilometers from its source in the Šumava Mountains to its confluence with the Elbe River, it covers a drainage area of 28,090 square kilometers — a mother river that has nurtured the Czech people.

The wide and slow-moving Vltava River cuts through Prague, a city with millennia of history, dividing it in two and giving rise to many magnificent bridges spanning the banks.

In the past, whenever heavy rains hit, the Vltava River would often flood. To address this issue, many structures were built along the banks to raise the city's foundation next to the river, solving the flooding problem.

Thanks to this, travelers can simply take a stroll along the riverbanks or go on a boat ride to take in Prague’s iconic architectural ensemble, and even explore the city’s history, stories, and culture through its waterways.
