National Museum Prague

The National Museum of Prague (Czech: Národní muzeum) is a public museum in the capital city of Prague, Czech Republic. It was established on April 15, 1818, shortly after the French Revolution. The National Museum is a neo-Renaissance building situated at the top of Wenceslas Square. It was constructed between 1885 and 1891 by the renowned Czech neo-Renaissance architect Josef Schulz, having previously been temporarily housed in several aristocratic mansions.

In 1945, the building was bombed, but the collections had been relocated and thus remained undamaged. It reopened in 1947. In 1968, Soviet military gunfire severely damaged the museum's façade, leaving many sandstone pillars riddled with bullet holes and some statues also harmed. Restoration work took place between 1970 and 1972, but the damage is still visible as the bullet holes were repaired using a different type of sandstone.

The National Museum comprises the Museum of History, the Museum of Natural History, a library, and more. At its entrance stand statues of the deities of history and natural science. The museum displays Czech historical artifacts related to archaeology, anthropology, and more. Its interior is adorned with marble, and its walls feature various historical murals, giving it a distinctive character. On the second floor of the museum, there is a hall with numerous booths showcasing traditional crafts. Passing through a corridor, you’ll find the Bohemian crystal exhibition hall, where a variety of minerals are also on display.
