Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square (Czech: Václavské náměstí) is one of the main squares in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and the center of commercial and cultural life in Prague’s New Town. Many historical events have taken place here, making it a traditional site for -,- celebrations, and other public -. The square is named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia.

Originally called Horse Market (Czech: Koňský trh), during the Middle Ages this area served as a horse-trading market. In 1848, following a proposal by Karel Havlíček Borovský, it was renamed Saint Wenceslas Square (Svatováclavské náměstí). Rather than resembling a typical square, Wenceslas Square is more like a boulevard, shaped as an extremely elongated rectangle measuring 750 meters in length and just 60 meters in width, covering a total area of 45,000 square meters, and oriented from northwest to southeast. The southeastern end of the square is situated at a higher elevation, ending with the grand neoclassical building of the National Museum of the Czech Republic; its northwestern end extends to the boundary between the New Town and the Old Town.

Wenceslas Square is home to hotels, office buildings, retail shops, currency exchange booths, and fast-food restaurants. To the embarrassment of locals and authorities, it also serves as a key area for street prostitution at night. The surrounding area features many - nightclubs, contributing to Prague’s reputation as a hotspot for bachelor parties.
