St. Simon and the Prophet Hannah Church

St. Simon and the Prophet Hannah Church is situated on a street near the port of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Constructed between 1752 and 1755, it was built at the initiative of Russian sailors of that era. After the renowned Great Northern War, construction flourished around Tallinn, and this church was the second Eastern Orthodox church to emerge during that period.

Because Tallinn was particularly close to the coastline at the time, the church was deliberately built on the waterfront, so its foundation had to be filled in to ensure stability. It is said that debris from ships sunk during the Northern War was used to fill the lower part of the church’s foundation. The completed St. Simon and the Prophet Hannah Church is a charming wooden structure with a fairytale-like beauty.

St. Simon and the Prophet Hannah Church suffered severe damage during the Soviet era but was preserved after being repurposed as a gymnasium. During that time, the church’s bell tower and dome were also destroyed. Fortunately, the church was restored after Estonia regained independence. Since 2001, the Eastern Orthodox Church has been active here once again.
