A spectacular all-white cluster of towers—the world’s most magnificent Gothic cathedral

Stepping out of the metro station, you’re greeted by a massive white marble structure towering over the square, bustling with tourists. This is the pride of Milan—the Milan Cathedral.

The Milan Cathedral is the third-largest church in the world, after St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and Seville Cathedral in Spain. It is also the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and Italy’s most visited tourist landmark.

The foundation of the cathedral was laid in 1386, and it wasn’t completed until the 20th century—a construction period spanning nearly 600 years. Initially sponsored by the archbishop and designed in the Lombard style, the project later saw the involvement of architects from Germany and France under the insistence of the Visconti family. They used Candoglia marble to continue the construction in the International Gothic style.

The large open square in front of the cathedral has no obstructions, emphasizing the grandeur of the church. The entire cathedral features 138 Gothic spires, showcasing the utmost intricacy and opulence of the era. From top to bottom and inside out, every inch is adorned with exquisite carvings.

The cathedral’s interior is filled with tall, numerous carved pillars. Due to the church’s broad and square design, the arrangement of all the columns is clearly visible. Stepping inside, you can’t help but feel both admiration and reverence.
