The Church of the Holy Ghost is one of the oldest churches in Tallinn and the only sacred building that has preserved its original exterior. With its magnificent snow-white octagonal tower, it is located next to Tallinn Town Hall Square. Built in 1630, the church still retains its original exterior to this day, except for its Baroque spire.

The Church of the Holy Ghost has played a crucial role in Estonian history. Its bell tower dates back to 1433 but was later destroyed by fire—nevertheless, it remains the oldest in Tallinn. The church features a stunning interior and exterior, with its ornate, colorful facade clock being the oldest public timepiece in Tallinn, dating from the 17th century. Inside, there are Gothic-style wooden carvings, including several treasures. For example, the unique altar designed in the 15th century by the renowned artist Bernt Notke from Lübeck is one of Estonia’s oldest pulpits, dating back to 1597, and is truly captivating.

Originally established as part of the adjacent Holy Ghost Hospital, which was built for the elderly and sick of the town, the church remained the main parish church for the public throughout the Middle Ages. After renovation, the first sermon delivered here was in Estonian, rather than German. The pastor Johan Koell’s “Catechism” published in 1535 is considered the first book printed using the Estonian language.
