Estonian Open-Air Museum

The Estonian Open-Air Museum is a vivid 18th-century village consisting of a church, an inn, a school, several mills, a fire station, 12 farmhouses and sheds. Covering an area of 79 hectares with about 72 buildings, it was established in 1957 in the Rocca al Mare district, showcasing 68 farmhouses from northern, southern and western Estonia arranged as a row of 12 farmsteads.

The original idea to establish the Estonian Open-Air Museum began in 1913, inspired by Scandinavian open-air museums that captured the interest of Estonian intellectuals at the time, who then wanted to create a similar museum in Estonia. The museum’s farmsteads and old public buildings are uniquely arranged to recreate the native architectural styles of Estonia over the past two centuries. Most of the houses are made of wood, and everything has been preserved as it was 200 years ago. You can see everyday items, decorations, and carved patterns on the walls inside the farmers’ homes, as well as enjoy traditional dances and music performances – all precious fragments of Estonian history.
