Kumu Art Museum

The Kumu Art Museum is a large art museum located in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. It is the largest museum in the Baltic region and one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe. It is one of the five branches of the Art Museum of Estonia and serves as its main building.

The complex main building of the Kumu Art Museum is itself a work of art. After nearly 10 years of design and construction, it opened in 2006. Its designer, Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori, won the competition in 1994. The construction project lasted three years, from 2003 to 2006. The Kumu Art Museum is considered a masterpiece of modern architectural art. A clever combination of limestone and copper creates this uniquely curved and structured building, which is built into the side of a limestone cliff.

The exhibitions at the Kumu Art Museum aim to attract a wide range of audiences and are mainly divided into permanent and temporary exhibitions. The permanent collection primarily features Estonian artworks from the 18th century onward, including pieces from the period of Estonian occupation between 1940–1991, as well as works of Socialist Realism and the Soviet era. The temporary exhibitions mainly showcase contemporary art from both Estonia and abroad.
