The Estonian Song Festival is one of the largest amateur choral events in the world and a masterpiece of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. It takes place once every five years at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, during the month of July. This spacious event venue in Kadriorg holds a special place in the hearts of Estonians. In 1988, it was here that a massive anti-Soviet rule music event—known as the Singing Revolution—took place, laying the foundation for Estonia’s path to independence.

Designed primarily for outdoor performances, the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds were built in 1959 and host large-scale musical events every year. The most renowned of these is the Estonian Song Festival, which gathers around 30,000 performers and 200,000 spectators each time. Next to the open-air concert stage stands the 42-meter-tall Song Tower, which has been newly renovated and opened to the public in December 2009. It is a tradition to light up the Song Tower at the start of each celebration, and exhibitions of Song Festival photographs adorn every level of the tower. Visitors can also head up to the observation deck at the top for panoramic views.
