Freedom Square in Tallinn

Freedom Square in Tallinn is located at the southern end of Tallinn’s Old Town. To its east stands St. John’s Church, built between 1862 and 1867; to the south are Karl August Weizenberg Street and an underground shopping center constructed between 2008 and 2009; and to the west is the famous Victory Column commemorating the War of Independence. During the Soviet era, the square was called Victory Square.

The current Freedom Square in Tallinn was designed by renowned Estonian architects Tiit Trummal, Veljo Kaasik, and Andres Alver, covering a total area of 7,752 square meters. Today, it is a leisure destination, facing two art galleries and surrounded by benches and café seating. Here, the architecture on both sides of the square reflects the city’s building style and Art Deco influences from the 1940s.

To learn more about the history of Freedom Square, all you need to do is look ahead—at the northwest corner of the street, where the Harju Gate Tower has stood since the Middle Ages. For additional historical information about the square, as well as some scientific fun, you can visit the AHHAA Science Centre in the underground art gallery opposite the square.
