Kadriorg Palace

Kadriorg Palace is located in a park in the Kadriorg district of Tallinn and was built after the Great Northern War. Its name originates from the Kadriorg district where it stands. Between 1718 and 1725, Peter I of the Russian Empire wanted to build a temporary summer residence here, leading to the creation of Kadriorg Palace.

Kadriorg Palace was designed by the Italian architect Niccolo Michetti and is built in the Baroque style. During its construction, Peter I and his wife Catherine visited several times. Peter I passed away in 1725, and Catherine had no interest in living there. The magnificent palace was decorated with great luxury, but unfortunately, Peter I and Catherine almost never officially resided in it. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the palace was largely abandoned by the Russian royal family. In the 1930s, Estonia’s first president renovated it for use as his private residence. In 1921, the palace was opened as the Estonian Art Museum to house international artworks.
