Sigismund's Column

Attraction Introduction   The sculpture was destroyed during World War II and restored in 1949. The bronze statue of King Sigismund III stands atop a red marble column, wearing a crown and royal attire, holding a cross in his left hand and a sword in his right, commanding reverence. The column is 22 meters tall, and its base features a copper plate decorated with scroll patterns, engraved with the names, titles, and praises of members of the royal family, as well as the name of the monument's builder. Features   Sigismund's Column was built in 1644 in Castle Square of Warsaw’s Old Town, commissioned by King Władysław IV. It was erected to commemorate the relocation of the capital to Warsaw by former King Sigismund III, and was designed by Constantino Tencalla. Along with the Mermaid, Sigismund's Column forms part of Warsaw’s city emblem.
