The number of Chinese tourists traveling to Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea has declined. The top travel destinations for Chinese travelers have shifted from Asia to Europe. In the first quarter of this year, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Europe more than doubled. It is estimated that nearly 6 million Chinese tourists will travel to Europe each year over the next two years, bringing 150 billion yuan in tourism economic benefits to the region. Among the most popular European cities for Chinese tourists are Rome, London, and 11 other cities.
According to Chinese media reports, the newly released "2017-2018 China Outbound Tourism Trends Report to Europe" shows that the popularity of European travel among Chinese people has rebounded this year. The middle class, which makes up the main group of travelers, is shifting from Asian travel to European travel, favoring experiences such as luxury shopping, museum visits, cultural heritage exploration, fine wine and cuisine, and rural tourism.
Moreover, based on the sales performance of European tour packages on Chinese travel websites, Chinese tourists are moving away from the traditional "9-day, 10-country" multi-country tour model toward independent travel and in-depth experiential trips. The most popular European city among Chinese tourists is Rome, followed by London, Frankfurt, Paris, Barcelona, Moscow, Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, and major Nordic cities such as Amsterdam and Helsinki.
