Historic Centre of Warsaw

During the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944, over 85% of the buildings in the Historic Centre of Warsaw were destroyed by Nazi forces. After World War II, the people of Warsaw spent five years rebuilding their ancient city, constructing churches, palaces, and trading venues. The rebirth of Warsaw remains an indelible chapter in the architectural history from the 13th to the 20th century.

The Warsaw Cultural Centre is close to the Vistula River bank, with the city developing around the Market Square. Its most distinctive feature is the grid-like layout of the streets. As the streets extend outward from the city centre, this regularity gradually diminishes, while wide squares offer expansive views. The facades of 16th to 18th-century buildings provide a delightful scene for Warsaw, with houses adorned with murals and stone gates stretching along the market. Another row of buildings near the square features decorative arches and arcades. Near the castle at the edge of the Old Town, a cluster of brightly coloured residences blends harmoniously with the rest of the city. Overlooking the entire city, the Royal Castle is accompanied by several commemorative structures that adorn post-war Warsaw, showcasing various styles such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. A green belt of woods near the castle and along the Vistula River encircles the Old Town.

On the southern side of the Old Town lies the pentagonal Warsaw Royal Castle, also known as Warsaw Castle, an architectural masterpiece with lavish interiors. The Royal Castle Gallery houses oil paintings by Jan Matejko, Poland’s most renowned historical painter, all depicting Polish history. To the west of the castle is a small square, at the southern end of which stands a 22-metre-high granite column. Atop the column is a bronze statue of Sigismund III, who decided to establish Warsaw as the capital. This column is Warsaw’s oldest monument and one of its symbols, forming a harmonious theme with the Royal Castle.
