Sigismund's Column

Sigismund's Column (Sigismund's Column) is one of Warsaw's most famous landmarks, erected in honor of Sigismund III Vasa, who moved the Polish capital from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596.

Sigismund's Column was built between 1643 and 1644 under the order of Sigismund III’s son, Władysław IV Vasa. The design was created by the Italian-born architect Constantino Tencalla and sculptor Clemente Molli. The column was modeled after the Italian column in front of St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome (designed by Carlo Maderno in 1614), as well as Rome's Column of Phocas, which Władysław IV visited during his trip to Rome in 1625.

The column stands 22 meters tall (including the base). On September 1, 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising, it was demolished by the Germans. It was rebuilt between 1948 and 1949. The rescued statue of the king was placed on a new granite column, facing Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, creating one of the most beautiful views in Warsaw.
