Warsaw Royal Castle (Royal Castle in Warsaw) served as the official residence of Polish monarchs from the late 16th century until the partitioning of Poland over 200 years later. It is located in Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) at the entrance to Warsaw’s Old Town.

Throughout history, the Warsaw Royal Castle suffered destruction and looting by Swedish, Brandenburgian, German, and Russian forces. The Constitution of May 3, 1791 — Europe’s first modern national constitution and the world’s second oldest — was drafted here by the lower house of parliament. In the 19th century, after the failure of the November Uprising in 1830, the castle was used by the Tsar as an administrative center. From 1926 until World War II, the palace served as the presidential residence of Ignacy Mościcki, President of Poland. After being damaged during World War II, the Warsaw Royal Castle was rebuilt.

Today, the Warsaw Royal Castle is listed as a national historic monument and has been turned into a national museum. It stands as a symbol of Poland’s national historical heritage and a witness to the nation’s rise and fall. The castle houses numerous treasures from Polish rulers throughout the ages, and the Castle Gallery features paintings by Jan Matejko, Poland’s most renowned historical painter, all depicting scenes from Polish history.
