On August 1, 1944, 50,000 Polish resistance fighters launched an uprising against the Nazi German occupiers with the support of hundreds of thousands of Warsaw citizens. The uprising lasted 63 days and ultimately failed. Poland was the first country to fall to Nazi Germany, but the resistance that erupted here stands as one of the most iconic acts of defiance in European history during World War II. Some say that if you visit Warsaw without going to the Uprising Museum, you haven’t truly connected with the Polish spirit.

The Warsaw Uprising Museum is housed in the former power plant of the 79th Tram Company, covering an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. The brick factory structure paired with cool-toned lighting gives the exhibition space a distinctly realistic atmosphere. The museum’s layout makes it easy for visitors to immerse themselves in the history—here, there are 1,500 photographs, 800 exhibits, and a wealth of audiovisual materials. Visitors can see images of spirited resistance marches, ordinary citizens passing bricks to build defensive structures, a newlywed couple smiling brightly amid the ruins, and soldiers lying dead on the street amid thick smoke—as if walking alongside them through the streets of Warsaw in 1944.

The Warsaw Uprising Museum also features many ingenious designs—for example, small holes in the walls where you can press your ear to hear the rumble of war; protruding telescopes that reveal scenes of battle or daily life; and an elevator ride accompanied by wartime songs. One exhibition area is designed as a printing workshop, with a corner displaying the uniforms of printing workers, reflecting the remarkably vibrant underground publishing industry of the time.
