Fryderyk Chopin Museum

The Fryderyk Chopin Museum is located at No. 1 Okólnik Street in Warsaw, situated within the Ostrogski Castle. The building is constructed on a brick-supported framework and is a Baroque-style palace commissioned in the late 17th century by Duke Janusz Ostrogski. It was designed by the renowned Dutch architect Tylman van Gameren. Over the centuries, the interior of the palace has served various functions and undergone several renovations. After World War II, the Polish people reconstructed the building based on historical drawings, restoring it to near-original condition by 1954. It then became the Fryderyk Chopin Museum.

In 2010, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth, the Polish government funded an internal renovation of the museum, adding multimedia features such as video and audio elements. The renovated museum is regarded as one of the highest-quality biographical museums in Europe. The exhibition space covers 4,600 square meters, nearly double its pre-renovation size. The collection includes over 5,000 items, such as Chopin’s manuscripts, letters, documents, as well as paintings and sculptures related to him. The museum has five exhibition halls, each dedicated to different themes including Chopin’s birthplace and life in Warsaw, his life and personal belongings in France, his concert tours across Europe, and his romance with French writer George Sand.
