Attraction Introduction

The Hauptplatz (Central Square) is the liveliest spot in the Old Town and the best starting point for a walking tour. The magnificent and grand Town Hall in the center of the square is a landmark building of Graz; at the center is the Erzherzog-Johann-Brunnen (Archduke John Fountain), the statue in the middle of the fountain commemorates Archduke John, the most beloved monarch of Graz. Around the statue are four female figures symbolizing the four rivers flowing through Styria: the Enns, the Mur, the Drau, and the Sann. The steps of the fountain also serve as a great resting spot for visitors; the busy Herrengasse street is located right next to the square.

During the Middle Ages, this was an important trade and commerce hub, which later gradually became the city center of Graz. In 2002, the Graz government reconstructed and refurbished the square, turning it into a venue for public gatherings and tourist activities. When night falls, melodious music accompanied by soft lighting drifts across the square, and the beautiful fountain is surrounded by couples, creating a romantic and heartwarming atmosphere that is truly enchanting.

A short walk to the corner of Sporgasse Street opposite the central square leads to an orange-red house called the Luegghaus. The entire façade of the house is adorned with elaborate stucco reliefs, showcasing the ornate and intricate carvings of Baroque style in full splendor. This 16th-century building is the oldest pharmacy in Graz.
