Swiss mountain railways have always been a source of fascination, yet these special trips are often not included in Rail Europe’s pass packages. In response to growing demand from travelers, Rail Europe announced that it is now selling tickets for the Gornergrat Railways, making it easier for visitors to explore Switzerland’s iconic rail routes.

To take in the breathtaking beauty of the Alps, the Gornergrat is a must-visit destination. The observation platform at Gornergrat is open year-round and bathed in sunshine, making it a top-tier tourist spot. Surrounded by 29 mountains over 4,000 meters in elevation, including Switzerland’s highest peak and the Alps’ second-longest glacier, the site offers sweeping, majestic mountain views. Travelers riding the Matterhorn Railway can even get a seemingly close-up view of the Matterhorn, the world-famous Toblerone Swiss chocolate bar’s inspiration.

Travelers can depart from the resort town of Zermatt and take the highest outdoor cogwheel railway in Europe, built in 1898, to reach the Gornergrat at an altitude of 3,089 meters. Trains depart every 24 minutes, and this 9,339-meter journey lasting 33 minutes promises an unforgettable experience. Towering above are 29 mountains over 4,000 meters high, including the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, standing like a majestic honor guard. Ticket holders can also visit the year-round observation platform to enjoy the spectacular scenery. Tickets and inquiries are available at www.raileurope.fr.
