Attraction Introduction

The Ducal Palace Painted House (Herzogshof/Painted House) is a building adorned with numerous paintings and murals, making it particularly eye-catching among the structures on Herrengasse. In the 15th century, the Habsburg family had their offices in this building. The murals were painted in 1742 by artist Johann Mayer and depict various figures from Greek and Roman mythology as well as different legends. The window tracery decorations also reflect popular styles of the time.

The gods depicted on the front facade of the Ducal Palace are divided into three tiers: at the lowest level, closest to the people, are the god of wine, the god of craftsmanship, and the goddess of the hearth; the middle section features the sun god, the god of the underworld, and Jupiter, the king of the gods; while the top tier includes the god of commerce, the god of war, the god of the art of war, and the god of medicine. Additionally, the murals covering the walls of the entire building span approximately 220 square meters, richly illustrating many myths and legends. This building is unique in Austria and considered highly precious.
