Millennium Stadium

The Millennium Stadium is located in Cardiff, Wales, and serves as the home ground for the Welsh national football team. Opened in 1999, it was built by the Welsh Rugby Union to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup, at a cost of £126 million. The stadium has a capacity of 74,500 spectators and is the second in Europe and the largest in the world with a retractable roof.

In addition to football matches, the Millennium Stadium also hosts rugby games and indoor cricket matches. Its movable pitch allows the venue to be used for other events such as concerts and exhibitions. In 2005, it became the first indoor venue for the World Rally Championship. There are also some stadium-related superstitions surrounding the Millennium Stadium — for example, it's said that the Community Shield is a predictor of the Premier League season, where the winner often misses out on the league title, though this curse was broken by Chelsea in the 2009–2010 season. Additionally, there’s the “Mystery of the South Dressing Room,” where teams that draw the south dressing room before a match are believed to go on to lose the championship — Arsenal is known to have experienced this, though it’s also said to have been broken by Manchester United.

During the 2012 London Summer Olympics, the Millennium Stadium hosted at least eight football matches, including a women’s match before the opening ceremony. Beyond sports events, the stadium has also held various concerts, such as the Manic Street Preachers performance on the eve of the millennium, and the BBC’s recording of “Songs of Praise” on the first day of the new millennium.
