UK Village with the Longest Name in the World Implements Full Smoking Ban — Not Even Outdoors Allowed!

Its name is not only the longest in all of Britain, but also the longest village name in the world. Recently, it has drawn renewed attention due to the implementation of a “village-wide smoking ban” policy!

The village of Llanfair­pwllgwyngyll is located in Wales, a principality under the United Kingdom.Its official English name is “Llanfair­pwllgwyngyll­gogerychwyrndrobwll­llantysiliogogogoch,” which alone contains 58 letters.In Welsh, after some adjustments, it still has 51 letters, making it the longest village name in the world. However, in Welsh, “Llanfair­pwllgwyngyll” is not the actual translation of the village’s name. It actually means “St Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel near a Rapid Whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio by the Red Cave,” but no matter how you translate it, the fact remains that its name is extremely long.

Famous for its name, many tourists specifically visit Llanfair­pwllgwyngyll just to take photos with the station sign. The village also offers scenic views of the strait and boasts pleasant landscapes. However, starting in April this year, the village implemented a new policy: “Smoking is completely banned, whether indoors or outdoors.” This includes not being allowed to smoke even in shops or pubs, as the village aims to become the first in the UK to prohibit smoking in public areas for visitors.

Some tourists humorously commented after learning about the new policy: “I can barely catch my breath just trying to pronounce the full village name, no wonder they don’t want people smoking here.” They also believe that in the future, the village will not only be famous for its long name, but its fresh air will become another notable highlight. For locals, it will also help reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.
