Cardiff is the capital of Wales in the United Kingdom, the country’s eleventh-largest city, and the largest city in Wales, with a population of approximately 519,700 and an area of 190 square kilometers. Situated on the southern coast of Wales, it began as a small town and became Wales' principal port in the 19th century, mainly transporting coal to key industrial hubs. By the 20th century, it was already one of Wales’ major cities. It was granted city status in 1905 and designated as the capital of Wales in 1955. Cardiff ranks first in Wales both in terms of population and population density, with around 91% of its residents being white.

The city of Cardiff features a mix of modern streets and buildings alongside traditional streets and historic churches. Notable tourist attractions include Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Bay, and the National Museum Wales. Cardiff Castle is located in the heart of the Welsh capital, with its enchanting, fairytale-like towers boasting exquisitely ornate interiors. The castle has a history of nearly 2,000 years. Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium is the home ground of the Welsh national football team and is also the second stadium in Europe and the largest in the world with a retractable roof. Cardiff University is situated in the city’s Civic Centre Gardens, right at the heart of Wales, and its unique location provides a quiet environment for study.
