Pembroke Castle is the magnificent ruins of a grand medieval fortress located in the Pembroke region of Wales, situated along the River Cleddau. It is an imposing and historic landmark.

Pembroke Castle was originally constructed in 1093 during the Norman invasion of Wales by Roger de Montgomery, the first Earl of Shrewsbury, who fortified the headland within his territory. However, the castle’s current appearance is largely owed to William Marshal — one of the most powerful figures in 12th-century England. After 1189, he transformed the original wooden and earthwork fortification into a stone castle and implemented extensive defensive designs inside. The castle was further expanded during the 13th century. In 1457, Henry VII was born here. He would later become the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty and the father of Henry VIII, the king who formally united England and Wales.

For a long period in history, Pembroke Castle was abandoned until a three-year restoration project began in 1880. From then until 1928, senior Major General Ivor Philipps acquired the castle and initiated large-scale renovation and reconstruction, including the walls, gates, and towers. After Philipps’ death, a trust was established specifically for the castle. It is now managed and operated jointly by the Philipps family and the Pembroke Town Council. The castle is open to the public as one of the region’s top tourist attractions and is the largest privately-owned castle in Wales.
