Pentre Ifan

Pentre Ifan (Pentre Ifan) is a transliteration of the name of an ancient manor, located in the civil parish of the small village of Nevern in northern Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is home to the largest and best-preserved Neolithic dolmen in Wales.

Archaeological studies suggest that this dolmen dates back to around 3500 BC and may have been used as a communal burial site at the time. The ancient stones that remain today form the entrance and main chamber of the dolmen. Originally, the structure was approximately 36.6 meters long and 17 meters wide, with carefully built dry stone walls surrounding the chamber entrance. Most of the original stones have since scattered, but at least seven still remain in their original form. The capstone measures 5.1 meters in length, is estimated to weigh 16 tons, stands 2.4 meters above the ground, and is skillfully supported by three upright stone portals.

Two archaeological excavations were carried out here, in 1936–1937 and 1958–1959, both led by archaeologist William Francis Grimes. Today, the dolmen is owned and maintained by Cadw (the Welsh historic environment service), and is well preserved and free for visitors to explore.
