Big Pit National Coal Museum is located on the edge of Blaenavon in South Wales and is an industrial heritage museum, as well as one of the UK’s premier mining museums. Big Pit was once a real coal mine, operating from 1860 to 1980, and has been open to visitors under the auspices of the National Museum Wales since 1983. The site was involved in coal extraction during the British Industrial Revolution and is now preserved as a monument to Wales’ mining heritage.

The newest additions to the visitor experience at Big Pit National Coal Museum include: a fascinating multimedia modern mining tour guided by a virtual miner; a new exhibition in the pithead baths; and the first public opening of the mine’s buildings. In addition to these, there is the world-famous underground tour — go 300 feet below ground with a real miner to experience the life of the thousands who worked at the coalface. The National Coal Museum’s facilities cater to visitors of all ages and combine education with entertainment, promising an exciting and informative day out. The museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, with underground tours running at intervals between 10:00 am and 3:30 pm.
