Castell Coch

Castell Coch is a Gothic Revival-style castle built on the ruins of a 13th-century fortification. The castle was constructed in the 19th century and is located in the northern part of Cardiff, perched on a steep hillside. Since January 28, 1963, it has been a Grade I listed historic building in the UK.

The castle is built with iron-rich limestone, giving the entire structure a faint reddish hue, which is why it is also known as the "Red Fortress." Inside, features such as a drawbridge, portcullis, and battlements faithfully preserve the characteristics of a medieval castle, while exuding a romantic atmosphere of the Victorian era. Whether it's the conical towers, red window frames, or the railings of the drawbridge, they all create a fairytale-like, almost magical ambiance.

Castell Coch was built by the 3rd Marquess of Bute to showcase a romantic vision of medieval legend and is one of his legacies to the city. It was designed and constructed under the direction of William Burges. Its interior decorations and furnishings are authentically medieval in style, rivaling the lavish interiors of Cardiff Castle. A highlight of the visit is the opulent drawing room, adorned with intricate models and figures inspired by Aesop’s Fables.
