Brecon Beacons National Park was established in 1957 and is located in southern Wales, making it one of the three national parks in Wales. The park covers an area of 1,344 square kilometers and includes mountains, moorlands, forests, pastures, lakes, and the broad Usk Valley. The eastern highlands of the park are the Black Mountains of Powys, located on the eastern bank of the River Usk between Abergavenny and Hay-on-Wye, with the highest peak being Waun Fach at 811 meters above sea level. The central part consists of the Brecon Beacons themselves, located south of Brecon, including Pen y Fan, the highest point in the park at 886 meters. The western section is the Black Mountain of Carmarthenshire, situated east of Llandeilo and south of Llandovery.

Brecon Beacons National Park boasts vast open moorlands, lush valleys, hidden waterfalls, fern-filled gorges, and four magnificent mountain ranges, as well as the Geopark: Wales’ first European and UNESCO Global Geopark. In addition to its stunning natural landscapes, the park also showcases over 7,000 years of human history—from ancient standing stones, Bronze Age cairns, Iron Age hill forts and Roman ruins, to medieval castles and the industrial-era landscape of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Brecon Beacons are ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, climbing, gliding, and caving. But if you’re looking for something more gentle, try fishing for brown trout in the River Usk or testing your skills at one of the park’s eight golf courses. All these activities are sure to work up an appetite, so head to one of the nearby traditional Welsh villages or market towns to sample local specialties: Welsh lamb, cheese, and the famous Glamorgan sausage.
