Wales Mountain Zoo

Wales Mountain Zoo, sometimes referred to as Colwyn Bay Zoo, is a zoo located near the town of Colwyn Bay in the Conwy County Borough of Wales. Opened on May 18, 1963, the zoo spans 15 hectares and was founded by wildlife enthusiasts and naturalist — Robert Jackson.

In 1983, the Welsh Mountain Zoo Society was established. Since then, the society has been heavily involved in the operation and management of Wales Mountain Zoo, introducing numerous development projects including the Jungle Adventure completed in 1986, the European Otter enclosure in 1987, Chimpanzee World and Star Attractions in 1990, the Children’s Farm in 1990, Bear Falls in 1996, and Golden Eagles in 1999. In 2006, Sea Lion Rock was added, home to California sea lions. In 2007, the Aviary was opened, featuring Andean condors and other South American birds. Wales Mountain Zoo is home to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and animals in the Children’s Farm. It has also successfully bred Wales’ first Bactrian camel.
