The first leg of the 2012 London Olympics torch relay began at Land's End. Why was this location chosen as the starting point? “Land's End” literally translates to “the end of the land.” The British regard it as a symbolic starting point for voyages, from where the UK embarked on its “Golden Age,” eventually becoming the “British Empire on which the sun never sets.” It is considered the “ends of the earth” in the hearts of the British—a place that inspires and marks new beginnings in life.

Land's End is located at the tip of the Cornish Peninsula, surrounded by sea on three sides. It is the southernmost point of mainland Britain. The distance from here, stretching north to St. Govan’s Head in Scotland, is 1,349 kilometers. On the coastal cliffs, you can find a white wooden sign marking Land's End—the literal edge of British land. Although not an official port, due to its unique location at the southwestern corner of England, Land's End has long symbolized the starting point of Britain’s expeditions to the world.

At Land's End, you won’t find England’s typically picturesque scenery. Instead, towering waves crash year-round and the sea wind howls relentlessly. Most visitors here take part in one of the area’s most iconic and motivational activities: planting their own “Land’s End signpost” as a symbolic marker for a fresh start in life.
