Maure House

Maure House is located in the town of Conwy, the capital of Conwy County Borough in north Wales. It is an Elizabethan townhouse dating back to the 16th century. With the assistance of Conwy County Borough Council, the residence has been restored to its original appearance and is considered the best-preserved Elizabethan town building in the UK.

Built between 1575 and 1586, Maure House is situated near the center of Conwy and was once the home of a wealthy merchant named Robert Wynn, who passed away in 1598. In 1616, his grandson inherited a large portion of his estate. Wynn once described the house as a “valuable and commodious house.” The most striking feature of the house is its extensive use of unique and high-quality plasterwork decoration, with the initials “R W” of the owner, Robert Wynn, carved in several places. Inside Maure House, every inch of its meticulously decorated interior is impressive — from the plaster ceilings, cornices, and expertly crafted woodwork to the opulent drawing rooms. Additionally, the house also features a garden that has been restored to its former glory.
