Conwy Suspension Bridge

The Conwy Suspension Bridge is located in the medieval town of Conwy, the capital of Conwy County Borough in North Wales. It is the world’s first road suspension bridge and was originally part of the A55 highway. Today, this unique bridge is managed by the National Trust and is no longer open to vehicles—only pedestrians are allowed.

Designed and constructed by Scottish civil engineer and architect Thomas Telford, the Conwy Suspension Bridge spans the River Conwy near Conwy Castle. Completed in 1826, it replaced a ferry that previously operated at the same location. Telford’s design features supporting towers that harmonize aesthetically with the towers of Conwy Castle. The bridge is built on the rocky outcrop where the castle stands and is situated so close to the castle that parts of the castle had to be demolished during its construction. Walking across the Conwy Suspension Bridge, with the River Conwy flowing beneath and the majestic Conwy Castle towering above, is a truly breathtaking experience.
