Bangor Cathedral

Bangor Cathedral is located in the city of Bangor, Gwynedd, northwest Wales. It is an ancient Christian place of worship dedicated to its founder, Saint Deiniol. For nearly 15 centuries, it has served as an important site for worship and prayer, and is also one of the oldest cathedral sites in the United Kingdom.

Originally built as a monastery in the 6th century under Saint Deiniol, the site unfortunately suffered raids in both 634 and 1073, with no part of the original structure surviving. Historical records indicate that the Synod of Westminster took measures to rebuild Bangor Cathedral in 1102. However, having endured much turmoil and multiple instances of destruction, the present-day Bangor Cathedral stands in an unassuming lowland area, having been largely reconstructed under the supervision of Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1868. A notable feature is the Mostyn Christ, believed to be a contemplative figure of Christ carved from oak, dating back to the late 15th century. The cathedral’s Bible Garden, which contains every plant mentioned in the Bible, is well worth a visit. The site also serves as the resting place of several bishops, adding to its sacred aura.
