The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum

The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum is located in Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, and was first established in 1967. It consists of two independent museums—the Folk Museum and the Transport Museum—and is one of the most important museums in Ireland. In 1967, the Folk Museum merged with the Belfast Transport Museum to form the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. In 1998, this museum further merged with the Ulster Museum and the Ulster-American Folk Park to establish the National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland, making it one of the three major national museums in Northern Ireland.

The Folk Museum covers an area of 170 acres and is dedicated to providing a comprehensive introduction to the traditional life and lifestyles of Northern Ireland, both past and present. The museum has recreated a number of houses based on historical building styles from various parts of Ireland, along with supporting facilities such as farms, cottages, crops, churches, and shops, vividly recreating the early 20th-century appearance of Northern Ireland. In addition, the Folk Museum regularly hosts many folk performances as well as live demonstrations of traditional Irish handicrafts, needlework, printing, and hearth cooking, helping to preserve the fading rural lifestyle of the past.

The Transport Museum houses a large collection of historically used vehicles and related materials, offering detailed exhibits and information on Ireland’s road, sea, and air transportation—both past and present. The collection of Irish railway-related items is particularly noteworthy, featuring many steam locomotives, passenger carriages, railway freight wagons, and other railway-related memorabilia. Through these exhibits, visitors can gain an in-depth understanding of over 150 years of transportation development in Ireland.
