Cave Hill Country Park

Cave Hill is one of Belfast’s most iconic landmarks, with its familiar silhouette visible from many parts of the city. Rising 368 metres above sea level, it is part of a range of low hills stretching eleven miles from Newtownabbey to Lisburn. Cave Hill Country Park was established in 1992, centred around the summit of Cave Hill and encompassing Hazelwood, Bellevue Gardens, Belfast Castle, and McArt’s Fort.

The park features two distinct areas: one is a local nature reserve, serving as a natural sanctuary and habitat for numerous wildlife and bird species; the other includes Belvgan and Hazelwood. Remnants of early colonial structures—such as stone monuments, lake houses, walls, and circular forts—create an archaeological area that sparks great interest among visitors. From the mid-19th century to the end of the century, limestone was quarried on the southern slopes of Cave Hill and transported to the docks via railway.

You can explore the park along its network of interconnected, scenic walking trails. Routes such as the Cave Hill Trail, House Trail, and Castle Trail are all well signposted. Additionally, activities like orienteering and nature walks offer outdoor learning experiences for all visitors. Backpacks, maps, and other gear can be purchased at the Castle Reception for a small fee. The Cave Hill Adventure Playground is a popular outdoor play area for children aged 3 to 14.
